When the firefighters of Colorado in unison answered the call for help to rescue some small puppies that had somehow mysteriously ended up stuck in a storm drain, the firefighters really had no clue about what they were really getting ready to encounter in full detail. On a recent Thursday, a fireman who was from the fire department of Colorado Springs was seen tenderly and carefully rescuing some small animals. They looked like tiny puppies.

They were black in color. The fireman was rescuing them from a storm drain. There were eight pups that had been in need of rescuing, as they were all found together in the storm drain and unable to get out by themselves, with no mother or father of the pups nearby in sight.

Assumption

The officials who had arrived at the scene of the puppies that needed to be rescued made the assumption that the pups were black Labradors and had been newly born. That is why the officials thought that a crime had been committed by the fact of someone having dumped the unwanted puppies down into the storm drain, according to the statement made by Brian Vaughn, the Fire Captain.

The Fire Captain indicated that the process of the rescue had taken a period of twenty minutes. Then the litter of pups was turned over to the Humane Society, which is noted as being located in Pikes Peak Region.

The discovery

But when the puppies were taken to the shelter, things changed concerning the identity of the supposed newborn black Labrador puppies that were undeniably adorable with their tiny faces looking so sweet and innocent. One of the vets that served at the shelter indicated that the puppies were not Labradors and never would be. They were not even dogs of any kind. The vet rather identified them as baby red foxes.

In shock

The firefighters were in shock to hear that these pups were baby red foxes, because they had no red on them. But when baby foxes are born, they are never red immediately. They always are born either with dark black fur or dark brown fur that will eventually change over time as the baby foxes mature.

It is common to see many foxes in the region of the nearby foothills of the Rocky Mountains. But most people would likely not be used to seeing baby foxes up close, which is why these baby foxes had been mistaken as newborn black Labrador puppies. The truth is, they do resemble them quite closely, though they are not even dogs!

Getting care

The sweet baby foxes who had the good fortune to be rescued by the kind and adept firefighters of Colorado are receiving good care at the Humane Society at this present time. However, it is not yet quite clear regarding their future once they have completed their rehabilitation.

But it is certain that the firefighters and those who are caring for them in some way wish them much success and safety with a long life of happiness and good health. It has been a touching story to realize that these baby foxes have been rescued and will now have a chance for a great and adventurous life.
